After many initial caveats about the dangers of using EMDR with individuals with dissociative disorders, a few proposals have been made for adapting EMDR procedures with this particular population.

Given these earlier caveats, EMDR is still viewed by many clinicians as offering interventions that are limited to processing traumatic memories in dissociative patients with high functioning; and only after a prolonged preparation phase involving other therapeutic modalities.

In such a conceptualization, the use of EMDR is severely limited, and many survivors of severe trauma are seen as unable to benefit from EMDR, or if they can, it would be at a much later stage. more advanced in the therapeutic course.

In this second part of the EMDR and Dissociative Disorders training with Dolores Mosquera, participants who have followed the first part will examine in depth the specific elements that indicate that one can move towards working with traumatic memories in complete safety. In her workshop Dolores Mosquera will present specific "micro" treatment techniques that increase stability and at the same time allow to work with parts of traumatic memories. As always, Dolores will amply illustrate these strategies with new video material.

Goals

Identifying and understanding the symptoms of people with complex trauma and past neglect: Participants will view videos and reflect on clinical vignettes to identify obvious, but also subtle monkeys of complex trauma.

Deepen your understanding of the effects of complex trauma and neglect from the EMDR perspective and the TAI model. An extended TAI model will be proposed to address the nature of dysfunctionally stored information in people with structural dissociation.

Learn to recognize and how to respond to the specific clinical challenges of the different phases of EMDR therapy for highly dissociative patients.

Learn to identify visible and hidden dissociative symptoms, and how to take them into account in the conceptualization of the case. The principles of case conceptualization and strategies for developing a comprehensive treatment plan will be explained, as well as their basis in relation to dissociative structures and associated phobias. Clinical examples will be shown on video.

Learn to identify and understand dissociative phobias from the Theory of Structural Dissociation of Personality (TDSP, Van der Hart, Nijenhuis & Steele, 2006) and their relevance for the EMDR process.

Learn how to apply the dissociative phobias framework in a way that helps them plan a step-by-step approach to traumatic content and dissociative phobias. Explore clinical vignettes and video demonstrations to illustrate procedures for identifying and overcoming these phobias.

Acquire a set of modified EMDR procedures to work safely in EMDR with dissociative patients. Examine and develop new skills in specific EMDR procedures through clinical vignettes and videos.
